Vanguard is an early icebox hybrid which matures in 76 days in Colorado. It produces a heavy, uniform crop of nearly round fruit.
The strong rind is an attractive fade resistant light green with dark narrow green stripes. The internal appearance is superior; bright red flesh contrasts nicely with small black seed. Compared to other hybrids in its class, Vanguard has better external color retention, improved flesh color and superior eating quality. It is the best eating watermelon early in the season.
